France and French culture Essay Despite the recent backlash against France and French culture in the past few years, as well as there being no shortage of jokes on television and on the radio at the expense at the France, the truth is that if it were not for the French and their involvement during the American Revolution, America would not have gained their independence from Great Britain. This assertion, despite the fact that historians do not like to play the game of ââ¬Å"what if,â⬠the large majority agree on this point. Historians from Gore Vidal, Stephen Ambrose and David McCullough all agree that had it not been for the assistance of France, America would not gave gained their independence. The ââ¬Å"bearâ⬠is Great Britain. An aggressive pursuit of imperialism on behalf of Great Britain in the late 18th and throughout the 19th centuries had not been seen since the end of the Roman Empire. The reasons for Franceââ¬â¢s involvement in the American Revolution might have been more a question of revenge against Britain than the involvement of spreading democracy throughout the world as France itself would experience only 10 years after their initial entrance into the war with their own French Revolution. When the French entered on the side of colonists, the war was going badly in general. There had been a number of victories for the Colonists but Americaââ¬â¢s only hope that a sustained war, brought on by implementing guerilla tactics would eventually lead to a tiring of the British troops. Also, it was the entire motivatation of the Colonists to get France on their side. Ben Franklin was pressing the French constantly for their help during this time. Also, it was not out of a coincidence that Franklin was chosen and not others since Franklin were adored by the French. Thomas Jefferson also was instrumental as well in getting France involved on the side of the Colonists. It is also not a coincidence that France was being targeted for their help. They, along with Great Britain, were the powers in the world at that time. That is why such a statement as ââ¬Å"Daddy and I killed the Bearâ⬠is accurate and correct. The bear is Great Britain. They did not conquer 1/3 of the world by being nice. ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠is France and the child is America. ââ¬Å"Daddyâ⬠is usually the stronger of the two and is more established. He is responsible for the care and well being of the child and helps the child to grow and to mature until eventually, the child exceeds the father in stature, independence and strength. However, the child would not be allowed to grow if not for the effort exerted on the part of the father. A father who neglects his son and does not raise him up in a proper way and the chances increase exponentially, for that child to fail to fully realize his full potential. The very same occurred in this instance and therefore, the aforementioned statement is accurate and carried a great deal of weight and validity.

Cutaneous Myoepithelioma | Case Study TITLE: Cutaneous myoepithelioma: A case report of an unusual and recently recognized entity ABSTRACT: Myoepitheliomas and mixed tumors were only recently recognized to occur primarily in soft tissue, and only small case numbers have been described. The present case is of 25-year-old male who had solitary, painless mass over right middle finger, measuring 3cm in greatest dimensions and light microscopy revealed a tumor composed of a mixed population of spindle, epithelioid and plasmacytoid cells arranged around a central chondromyxoid stroma. No definite diagnosis could be reached on this morphology and initial diagnosis of benign mixed stromal tumor was considered. Immunohistochemistry(IHC) was performed and the tumor showed strong positivity for Calponin and SMA, Ki-index showed low index, weak and focal positivity for S-100 and negative for Pan-CK. The final diagnosis of benign myoepithelioma was entertained. It has characteristic histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, which need to be differentiated from a variety of tumors CASE REPORT: Case history: A 25-year-old male presented with a solitary, painless mass over right middle finger, measuring 3cm in greatest dimension since 6months. There is no increase in size and overlying skin is smooth and unremarkable. The mass is firm, non- tender and mobile. X-ray showed a soft tissue mass with underlying bone unremarkable. Gross: Multiple tissue bits aggregate measuring 3Ãâ"2Ãâ"1cm and skin flap measuring 2Ãâ"1cm. Light microscopy: Revealed a tumor in the superficial dermis composed of a mixed population of spindle , epithelioid, and plasmacytoid cells arranged around a central chondromyxoid stroma. No definite diagnosis could be reached on this morphology and diagnosis of benign mixed stromal tumor was considered. Immunohistochemistry(IHC): IHC was performed and showed strongly positive Calponin and SMA. S-100 was weak and focally positive. Pan CK was negative. Ki 67 revealed low index (2%). The final diagnosis of Benign myoepithelioma was entertained. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS The primary differential diagnoses considered were extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) and ossifying fibromyxoid tumor (OFMT). EMC typically shows a multinodular growth pattern with cords of cells in a myxoid matrix. The tumor cells in EMC are more spindled than those of myoepitheliomas. S-100 protein and epithelial markers are expressed in a minority of EMC and usually only focally, while both the markers are often extensively expressed in myoepitheliomas. OFMT is a lobulated tumor surrounded by a rim of metaplastic bone. The tumor cells are mostly pale-staining ovoid to round cells. Approximately 70% of OFMT show positivity for S-100 protein and vimentin and 50% of tumor cells are positive for desmin. The tumor cells in OFMT are rarely positive for epithelial markers and GFAP. Myoepitheliomas are generally negative for desmin, nearly half positive for GFAP, and nearly always show positivity for keratin and S-100 protein.[1] Other tumors that should be differentiated are, Epithelioid benign fibrous histiocytoma that usually shows a superficial dermal tumor with a well-developed epidermal collarette. Spitz nevus is characterized by a junctional component, nesting and maturation of tumor cells. In epithelioid sarcoma, multiple tumor nodules around central necrosis or even myxoid degeneration are often seen. More morphologic uniformity is observed in epithelioid sarcoma over myoepithelioma. Moreover, approximately 90% of epithelioid sarcoma are positive for vimentin, cytokeratin, and EMA, and around 60% are positive for CD34, but are generally negative for other markers typical myoepithelial differentiation (S-100 protein, GFAP, myogenic markers). Cellular neurothekeoma consists of nesting of tumor cells, and are consistently S-100 negative.[2] COMMENT Tumors comprised mostly of myoepithelial cells without obvious epithelial differentiation are designated myoepitheliomas.[1] Neoplasms of myoepithelial cells can occur in a pure form as myoepitheliomas or in association with glandular structures as mixed tumors.[2] Myoepitheliomas of the skin and soft tissue were recognized only 10 years ago.[3] Myoepithelial cells can exhibit dual epithelial and myoid differentiation. They may also show divergent metaplasia, including squamous, adipocytic, bone and cartilaginous differentiation.[4,5] As a consequence, proliferating myoepithelial cells in neoplasms display a variety of histologic and immunohistochemical expression patterns. It has been postulated that cutaneous myoepitheliomas are related to mixed tumors of skin and that soft tissue myoepitheliomas are derived from deeply located adnexal structures. Cutaneous myoepitheliomas of the head and neck may be derived from salivary gland tissue, as has been reported in two parotid gland myoe pitheliomas presenting as infra- auricular subcutaneous masses.[6] Therefore, the possibility of an underlying primary salivary gland neoplasm should be considered in myoepitheliomas presenting in the head and neck. Myoepithelial tumors were described only recently in soft tissue, and, to date, fewer than 50 cases have been reported. Kilpatrick et al [3] reported a study of 19 patients with mixed tumors and myoepitheliomas of soft tissue in 1997. Michal et al [7] reported 12 additional cases of myoepitheliomas of the skin and soft tissues in 1999, Hornick and Fletcher conducted a study of 14 cutaneous myoepitheliomas. There were 11 males and 3 females. The study indicated that cutaneous myoepitheliomas occur with peaks in childhood (7 patients were between 10 and 20 years of age) and middle age and are most common on the extremities, in contrast to mixed tumors of the skin, which typically occur on the head and neck in middle aged or elderly adults.[1,3,4] Myoepitheliomas of soft tissue are often lobulated, and the most frequent architectural pattern is reticular or trabecular with chondromyxoid or hyalinized stroma. These lesions display the same wide range of histologic features as those of salivary gland origin. Many tumors are heterogeneous, containing an admixture of epithelioid and spindled cells, reticular areas merging with solid areas, at least focally prominent stroma, and occasional foci of cartilaginous or osseous differentiation. [8] A small subset of tumors approximately 10% are predominantly solid proliferations of spindled or plasmacytoid myoepithelial cells. Occasional tumors display features of so-called parachordoma, namely, large epithelioid cells with eosinophilic epitheliomas. Initially, myoepitheliomas were only recognized to contain spindled or plasmacytoid cells growing in solid sheets. [9]Current classifications therefore include all of these patterns within the spectrum of myoepithelioma, simply separating those tumors with ductal differentiation into the mixed tumor category.[10,11] Whereas some investigators allow up to 5% or 10% ductal differentiation in myoepitheliomas, others classify tumors with any ducts as mixed tumors. In any event, it is now widely thought that myoepitheliomas and mixed tumors fall along a spectrum of tumors with overlapping histologic appearances and similar clinical behavior. Because the immunophenotype of these lesions overlaps with myoepithelioma, and otherwise typical myoepithelioma s can show focal areas with ââ¬Å"parachordomaâ⬠-like features, it is becoming increasingly clear that parachordoma probably falls within the spectrum of myoepithelioma of soft tissue, as is reflected in the new WHO classification.[11] The only apparent difference in immunophenotype is GFAP and SMA negativity in parachordomas, because few cases of parachordoma have been studied and only about 50% of otherwise convincing soft tissue myoepitheliomas are GFAP positive and only around 40% are SMA-positive, then this distinction seems very questionable. Awareness of the wide morphologic range of myoepitheliomas is necessary to perform confirmatory immunohistochemical stains and thereby to arrive at the correct diagnosis.[12] In salivary glands, myoepitheliomas are generally positive for cytokeratins and S-100 protein, whereas immunostaining for actin and GFAP is variable. We therefore required immunoreactivity for either keratin or EMA, in conjunction with detection of S-100 protei n or myogenic markers, for the diagnosis of myoepithelioma and inclusion in this series. Neoplastic myoepithelial cells of all morphologic types often expressed myogenic markers.[13] As has been reported in the salivary gland, we found calponin to be the most sensitive myogenic marker, staining 86% of tumors, whereas SMA stained 36% and desmin only a small subset (14%). Interestingly, the basal cell/myoepithelial marker p63, which has shown utility in the differential diagnosis of carcinoma of breast and prostate due to the staining of myoepithelial or basal cells in in situ lesions, appears to be detectable in only one fourth of soft tissue myoepithelial tumors. Immunostaining for p63 is not specific for myoepithelial tumors, however, as this antigen has also been reported in other neoplasms, especially squamous cell and urothelial carcinomas.[13,14] Nonetheless, detection of p63 expression may provide helpful supportive evidence of myoepithelial differentiation in the proper morph ologic context. CONCLUSION: Cutaneous myoepitheliomas are relatively rare. Pathologists play an important role in reaching to accurate morphological diagnosis. Myoepitheliomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cutaneous and soft tissue tumors. Immunohistochemical study may aid in the diagnosis. Although most cutaneous and soft tissue myoepitheliomas behave in a benign fashion, there is a significant risk for local recurrence and a low metastatic potential. Before his death, Lord Hastings misperceives the "subtle, false, and treacherous" Richard, and only saw the face (i.e. the theatrical abilities of Richard), not the heart (1.1.37). Why, then, do we nod at wrongness? The answer lies in the fact that we are plummeted into absolute awe. We have reached a catharsis of our emotions in response to the summit of Richardââ¬â¢s manipulative character, where Lord Hastings had actually believed tha t Richard was a man incapable of manipulating. Our response is a sign of assent because Lord Hastings is completely justified for trusting Richard and ignoring Stanleyââ¬â¢s forebodings entirely. If Lord Hastings had the chance to relive his death scene, he would have two choices: to reiterate his regret for not listening to Stanley, or take a different course, and omit his regret. The study of this paper involves what types of justification Lord Hastings could offer if he had the opportunity to omit regret. His justification would necessarily contain an assessment of Richardââ¬â¢s compelling theatrical abilities. In other words, Lord Hastings would have to prove that Richard was too good of an actor for anyone to realize his acting. Lord Hastings now carries the burden of proof on his shoulders. Lord Hastings would probably refer to the ideal representation of brotherly love Richard shows to Clarence. ââ¬Å"We are not safe Clarence, we are not safe,â⬠Richard says, probably placing his hand on his brotherââ¬â¢s shoulder while stressing ââ¬Å"weâ⬠(1.1.70). In those words, Clarence felt warmth, despite the cold chains draping from his wrists; felt security, despite his insecurities about the reason as to why he was placed under arrest.

Purpose of appraisal schemes As it is said that the main problem that arises with an appraisal scheme is the confusion over the objectives that are set. Mainly it can be said that an appraisal scheme is used to develop staff by giving information for progression and resource planning, as well as being able to make out and state the weaknesses of performance. It helps to provide data that can relate to the salary that a member of staff should be paid and the improvements and chances that need to be made to staff to meet the required standards and improve them for the future. As well as helping to show whether the staff should have training/career planning and if so what they need in relation to it and how the communication can be improved between the manager and member of staff, especially in relation to general feedback. Methods of Reviewing and appraisal schemes It has been said that appraisals are the most suitable methods of reviewing employees for management and supervisory staff. Increasingly clerical, secretarial and manual staffs with skilled or technical jobs are now also being appraised. There are many different people within a business who may carry out an appraisal; the appraisers are sometimes called raters. Below I have shown a list of the people who may carry out an employeeââ¬â¢s appraisal, with explanation about them ad why they would be chosen: - Self-appraisal This is quite a new idea to the process of development. It is not a highly used form of reviewing. With self-appraisalââ¬â¢s, which is pretty self explanatory, the member of staff will perform a self-analysis in the traditional appraisal schemes, although there is the involvement of the superior whose decision officially counts. How is the theme of evil dramatized in Macbeth? Essay
In Elizabethan times everyone believed in the Natural Order which can also be referred to as The Chain of Being. The Chain of Being is a hierarchy, where God is at the top and the King is second, last are the elements; fire, air, water and earth. If something happened to the king everything under the kingââ¬â¢s rank would be affected. This stopped people overthrowing the king because they were told bad things would happen to them. We can tell that the Chain of Being was affected in Macbeth because of what some of the characters say in Act 2 Scene 4 after King Duncan has been murdered. ââ¬Å"A falcon towââ¬â¢ring in her pride of her place, Was by a mousing owl hawked at and killedâ⬠This shows an image of a mouse hunting an owl and killing it which is the reverse of what happens under normal circumstances. Animals are under the kingââ¬â¢s rank. The horses also turn to cannibalism, ââ¬Å"And Duncanââ¬â¢s horsesâ⬠â⬠¦ ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢tis said they eat each othe r.â⬠Treason is the illegal act of overthrowing the government or king. Macbeth manages to overthrow King Duncan, which is treason, and at the end of the play Macbeth gets overthrown by Macduff. Just a few years before Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, Guy Fawkes attempted to overthrow King James I. Treason involves people at lower ranks of the Chain of Being moving up the chain, which will include killing and murdering, which are evil acts. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for King James I, who had just been crowned, to warn him about the revolution that was about to take place. In Act 1 Scene 3 the opening establishes the witches as evil. They act haphazardly and randomly. There words ââ¬Å"fair is foul and foul is fairâ⬠, is chanted in a mischievous way. It implies the witches believe that evil is good and they find good repulsive. Not only does this portray their attitude to life but it is also a warning to the audience that there is much confusion and things are not what they may seem to be. Macbeth is also heard to utter these words and show that he is influenced by the witches. In Elizabethan times, witches were usually women rejected by society and represent evil. In the play they have a great influence over Macbeth and intend to involve him in their evil, ââ¬Å"There to meet with Macbeth.â⬠Evil is created around the witches because the witches are instantly thought to be dark and to have a connection with the devil. The feeling of evil is made stronger because the witches meet in lifeless dark places away from society. In Act 1 Scene 1 the witches meet in a desolate place and in Act 1 Scene 3 they meet on a heath. This creates an eerie feeling. The weather reflects the witchesââ¬â¢s emotions and in the four witch scenes there is thunder. All this emphasizes their destructive nature. The witches also do not look human. They are supposed to be women but they are bearded. ââ¬Å"You should be women and yet your beards forbid me to interpret â⬠Anyone who does not look ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ or human may have evil links. In some productions of Macbeth, the witches come across as alien, which can be evil as itââ¬â¢s not the norm. In one film production the witches are naked. It is a human trait to cover up with clothes. When asked where the second witch has been she replies ââ¬Å"killing swineâ⬠which shows cruelty for her own amusement. The curses they chant are to cause pain upon others which reflects their own evil behaviour ââ¬Å"sleep shall neither night or dayâ⬠ââ¬â the first witch causes insomnia upon Macbeth. In Act 4 Scene 1 the witches used black magic which involves adding ingredients to a cauldron. They use the image of innocence by adding a ââ¬Å"finger of a birth strangled babeâ⬠which shows new life destroyed. Many people would say this is evil. ââ¬ËThat look not likeâ⬠¦.ââ¬â¢ this, said by Banquo, shows us that he fears the witches and is unsure if they are real, on the other hand he confidently asks ââ¬ËWhat are youââ¬â¢, suggesting that he may know of the witches, or even be friendly with them. Although this also has the possibility of being interpreted as Macbeth seeing the witches as unnatural and evil for he does ask about what they are. Macbeth can be considered as being an evil character in that he kills King Duncan in cold blood by stabbing him. It is premeditated as indicated in the soliloquy of his inner thoughts. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢d jump the life to come, but in these cases, we still have judgment here.â⬠It also shows selfishness, ambition and self gain for the Kingââ¬â¢s position. In suspecting his close friend Banquo may want to turn Macbeth in for his crime, ââ¬Å"Wisdom that doth guide his valorâ⬠¦to act in safety.â⬠Macbeth knows he must get rid of Banquo and his manipulating character by convincing the murderers and himself that killing him is right. ââ¬Å"Both of you know Banquo was your enemyâ⬠¦so he is mine; and it such bloody distance that every minute of his being thrusts against my nearââ¬â¢st of life.â⬠He portrays evil in that he is plotting a murder against his friend and influencing others in believing that they are doing the right act in killing him. Others may consider Macbeth to be more of a strong warrior than evil. He goes beyond the limits of a solider in battle for his king and country. Therefore he can be seen as an honorable man ââ¬Å"What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath wonâ⬠. Lady Macbeth describes him as having ââ¬Å"Too full oââ¬â¢thââ¬â¢milk of human kindnessâ⬠, a humanity. Macbeth can be seen as corruptible for ambition but lacking the ruthlessness to get what he really wants. He is a complex character ââ¬â he has aggression and determination which makes him a successful warrior. However he also has a conscience with a sense of guilt. These contrasts in Macbethââ¬â¢s character and his attempts to fix them are what make him human. ââ¬Å"Commends thââ¬â¢ingredience of our poisoned chalice to our own lipsâ⬠. This shows Macbeth to be a reluctant murderer; he is troubled by his conscience even before committing the act. He uses the soliloquy to express his struggle between right and wro ng. Macbeth constantly questions his brutality and his inability to live with himself as a murderer. ââ¬Å"This is a sorry sightâ⬠. At the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth appears to be a kind, caring wife to Macbeth but underneath that ââ¬Å"innocent flowerâ⬠there is a ââ¬Å"serpentâ⬠, a scheming and manipulative woman. ââ¬Å"Look like thââ¬â¢flower but be the serpent underââ¬â¢tâ⬠. When Lady Macbeth finds out about the witches her determined ambition and her cold nature leads Macbeth astray. Lady Macbeth is so determined to succeed that she calls to the evil spirits to make herself more evil, ââ¬Å"fill me from crown to the toe-top, full of the direst cruelty! Make thick my blood.â⬠On the other hand Lady Macbeth can be seen to be a lonely and frustrated character. She is an ambitious woman in a manââ¬â¢s world where the men have all the power and control. She is often portrayed as being on her own, for instance when reading the letter as Macbeth is at battle and she misses him. She has a driven will with much energy and very little to do. She shows vulnerability and an inwards sense of horror at what she has done but at the same time she is denying these qualities incase she shows a weakness. ââ¬Å"These deeds must not be thought after these ways; so it will make us mad.â⬠In her sleepwalking, Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s conscience tortures her and she imagines her hands covered in blood. ââ¬Å"The thane of Fife had a wife. Where is she now? What, will these hands neââ¬â¢er be clean? No more oââ¬â¢that my Lord, no more oââ¬â¢that.â⬠She committed suicide. In conclusion I feel that Shakespeareââ¬â¢s message to his audience is that revolution should be created slowly as the characters at the top of the Chain of Being are not sympathetic to others. This was one of his strong beliefs as Shakespeare was a secret Catholic who supported the pope and was a sympathizer to Guy Fawkes. He also tells the audience that committing evil acts and affecting the Chain of Being ends up corrupting the system. If you are one of the people who committed the acts then, Shakespeare tells us it is hard to clear a guilty conscience. In Macbethââ¬â¢s search for power, he ends up killing Duncan which leads to several more murders. He started off by being known as ââ¬Å"Brave Macbethâ⬠but once the king was murdered he was corrupted by power. He was defeated by his constant search for more authority and control. Macbeth was only meant to be Thane Of Cawdor and when he managed to become king, he abused his power. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s sends us the message that some people were made to have more control because they could handle it and had the personality trait to control themselves with the amount of power they have. He also sends us the message that too much power corrupts. Many people would say that ambition in the key to success but in Macbeth it is a downfall. Macbeth has the three witches and Lady Macbeth constantly pushing his ambition. Shakespeare gives us that message that having ambition is good but you should go out of your own ability because it may lead to your death, like Macbeth. The relationship between good and evil is very clear to see. The main theme of the play is showing the audience how an honest, regular man can be changed into evil and be dehumanized. He is not evil but instead is surrounded by evil influences such as his wife and the witches. However, goodness does win as Macbeth is killed and the evil dies away with him.
